Dermatillomania, also known as excoriation disorder is a psychological condition characterized by recurrent and persistent picking at one's own skin, resulting in skin damage and sometimes even disfigurement.

People with dermatillomania may pick at healthy skin or at skin that is already damaged, such as scabs or pimples. They may use their fingernails, tweezers, or other tools to pick, and may pick at different parts of the body, such as the face, scalp, arms, and legs.

The causes of dermatillomania are not known, but it is related to anxiety, stress, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Treatment typically involves a combination of therapy, medication, and self-help strategies, such as avoiding triggers and keeping the hands busy with other activities. If you are struggling with skin-picking behavior, it is important to seek help from a mental health professional who can provide an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

So far the only place I pick my skin is near my wrist and I have kept this under control by reducing my stress, always wearing a Fidget Ring and being mindful. In case you think that things are getting out of control for you or your loved one, please look into HRT (habit reversal therapy) and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy).
